what would I pay to spend a day warm on the sand?
call me childish, but i absolutely love the song Part of Your World by The Little Mermaid. it's a children's show, but subtly speaks about the realities of life (including falling in love). this song, in particular, is a reflection of how the grass is always greener on the other side. how many times have we longed to graze on greener pastures? we look over onto the plate of the person beside and think that's yummier food. but reality is that, if it had been reversed and you had ordered that plate of food, you'd think the same. how many times have we waited for a cab on one side of the road and crossed onto the other side because you've spotted too many darned cabs on the other side, and guess what, all the cabs have decided to drive along the side of the road you were originally on? call it murphy's law or what have you, sometimes, the grass is just greener on the other side.
up where they walk, up where they run
up where they stay all day in the sun
wanderin' free - wish I could be
part of that world
as children, we envy the lives of the grown ups, where they don't seem to be ruled by any of the rules. their parents leave them be, but no they just wouldn't leave you, their child, alone. we can't wait to grow up, to be free of school and homework and parents' rules.
When's it my turn?
Wouldn't I love, love to explore that world up above?
Out of the sea
Wish I could be
Part of that world
how often have we hoped to be part of that world, thinking "when's it my turn"?
and then, like the Little Mermaid, once you reach up to that world, out of the sea, you realise that what you've perceived to be so green and luscious, is just brown and dry and just not the same.
i'm glad i actually embrace adulthood more than my peers. but being in another world, figuratively, has made me realise a lot of things. there are many pros and cons of both home and here. having this song run on my playlist just jolted my senses that some part of what i've been mulling over, is just over perceived greener pastures.
but for now, i'm content
just ruminating on the green-enough grass on this side.
