Bill Nye once said "everyone you will ever meet knows something you don't", meaning you can't ever know everything since knowledge has a beginning but not an end
…Because as we know, there are known knowns; there are things we know we know.
We also know there are known unknowns; that is to say we know there are some things we do not know.
But there are also unknown unknowns -- the ones we don't know we don't know.
- Donald H. Rumsfeld, 2002
knowledge of our purpose:
Purpose is the father of commitment. It is the mother of motivation.
It is the parent of passion. Purpose provides meaning.
It instils direction, inspiration, and unity. It also brings fulfilment.
Without a discovery of purpose, everyday life becomes oppressive and demeaning.
We can find little in it except the next thing, which is virtually indistinguishable from the last thing.
Purpose rescues us from this mundane existence.
Frank Viola.
there's something about complex wit that stirs up an excitement within me, like Rumsfield's quote. it's almost a tongue twister in itself - known knowns, known unknowns, unknown unknowns, and i suppose there's also the unknown known i.e. not knowing that you actually know something, like a hidden talent maybe?
and then comes the quote on purpose that is meaningfully deep. nothing is mundane when you have a purpose. but this purpose is not ours to define, it is for us to find out what we were made for. it ties in really nicely with a devotional by Andy Stanley: "His individual vision for your life is a small part of a grand plan for the universe that He envisioned and put in motion long before you or I came on the scene". it's unfathomable in our little human brain, but so flattering when we come to terms and briefly grasp that fact that we were created for a purpose that has long been defined, but yet is for us to venture and explore, and appreciate that purpose. it's slightly counterintuitive and we almost want to scream "why don't you just tell me what it is, if you already have a plan". but that's the beauty of free will - you make the choice. all roads don't lead to Rome unfortunately, because if you choose a path that leads you elsewhere and you end up unable to leave another city, you will not get to Rome. it's called faith for a reason, because it's about placing your trust in something you can't yet see, but having the assurance and peace that it is the right thing. having faith does not mean it will be easy, it's rough and tough, but it makes it possible.
"everything will be okay in the end.
if it's not okay, it's not the end."
